For more than 30 years, Mike has provided his clients with practical and effective legal representation.  A significant portion of Mike’s practice involves assisting clients that are buying, selling, developing, financing, and leasing commercial real estate.  He also has significant experience with contract negotiations and business issues.  Mike’s clients include nonprofit hospitals, municipalities, property management companies, developers, farmers and individuals.

Mike is a certified real property specialist.  He also serves as an elected member of the Real Property Counsel of the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA), which operates as the governing body of the MSBA’s Real Estate Section.

Businesses and individuals retain Mike to help them with their most important and complex projects.  For example, Mike assisted one of his healthcare clients develop the first standalone emergency room in Minnesota.  He also helped a municipal client structure and document one of the first community center projects in Minnesota that involved a city and a school district sharing a recreational facility.

Real Estate Law

For real estate matters, Mike:

  • Advises landowners, developers, and municipalities on subdivisions, variances, development agreements, and land use matters.
  • Drafts easements for highways, roads, trails, utilities, drainage areas, and conservation lands.
  • Represents landowners and governmental entities in eminent domain matters.
    • Representation of property owners has included cases involving state highways, county state-aid highways, drainage/utility easements, and temporary construction easements.
    • Representation of governmental entities has included cases involving city streets, county state-aid highways, regional trails, drainage/utility easements, and temporary construction easements.
  • Has served as a condemnation commissioner in multiple counties/matters and is listed as available to serve in the following counties: Carver, Hennepin, Kandiyohi, Le Sueur, Meeker, McLeod, Scott, Sibley, Swift, and Wright.


Health Care Law

Mike has been providing healthcare related legal services since 1992.  His experience in the healthcare area includes:

  • Medical office buildings – acquisition, development, leasing, and eminent domain owner/tenant representation
  • Acquisitions and affiliations
  • Ambulance services
  • Conduit tax-exempt bond financing
  • HIPAA/medical records
  • Health care related contracting
  • Patient issues

Mike has assisted his healthcare clients acquire, develop and lease hundreds of thousands of square feet of medical office/clinic space in the Twin Cities area.  Although most of Mike’s healthcare related work centers around real estate development and operation, he also helps his clients with day to day compliance and patient issues.


Municipal Law

For municipal matters, Mike:

  • Advises municipalities on land use matters, including subdivisions, variances, and development agreements.
  • Has extensive experience with easements, including easements for state highways, county roads, city streets, roundabouts, trails, sidewalks, temporary construction areas, utility corridors, drainage areas/ponds, and conservation areas.
  • Drafts ordinances for zoning, licensing, and other matters.
  • Works with municipalities on 429 projects, including public improvement hearings, assessments, and construction contracts.
